Course Aims
To provide candidates with the skills and underpinning knowledge to enable them to undertake work near or adjacent to DC conductor rails; it is designed to provide the delegates with the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to work safely near or adjacent to DC conductor rails.
Who is this course suitable for?
Any person who will be required to undertake work in and around 3rd and 4th rail areas must have this competency on their Sentinel Card. This can be undertaken as a third days training following a PTS Initial.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, the candidates will have the skills and knowledge and understand the behaviours required to work safely near or adjacent to DC conductor rails.
They will be able to describe the principles of the DC electrified system, identify the main components of the DC system and the hazards and risks associated with working DC conductor rail areas.
Course Summary
- Describe the principles of the DC Electrified system.
- Identify the main components of the DC conductor rail system.
- Identify hazards and risks associated with being near or adjacent to the DC conductor rail.
- Describe how to cross the DC conductor rail safely.
- Describe how to transit tools and equipment safely across the DC conductor rail.
- Describe defects that would render insulated tools and equipment unfit for purpose.
- Identify hazards associated with working within DC isolations.
- Describe the work safe and emergency response procedures
- Demonstrate how to inspect insulated tools before use.
- Demonstrate the correct application and removal of conductor rail shields.
- Identify defective tools and shields.
- Identify the three risk control areas as stated in NR/L3/MTC/EP0152.
- Demonstrate how to cross the conductor rail safely.
- Explain how to safely transit tools, materials and equipment within the DC electrified area.
- Demonstrate how to apply a Track Circuit Operating Clip safely.
Pre-Requisite Requirements
Must bring Sentinel smart card with PTS (or have just completed and successfully passed PTS Practical training)
It is the Sponsors responsibility to ensure candidates booked onto the course are eligible for the training they are to receive and in line with any relevant medical level or restriction that may apply, in accordance with NR/L2/OHS/00124 Competence Specific Fitness Medical Requirements.
Please be aware that candidates will be treated on a training event as if they are at work and they must comply with the relevant medical policy and bring their Sentinel Smartcard (if applicable) which will be swiped at the start of the course.
Must be a minimum age of 16.
Meet the medical requirements of Network Rail Standard NR/L2/OHS/00124 Competence Specific Fitness Medical Requirements to minimum medical level 4 and Network Rail Standard NR/L2/OHS/00120 (Drugs & Alcohol).
Must have sufficient command of English language, and of the English language as detailed in Network Rail Company Specification NR/L2/CTM/021 (Competence & Training in Track Safety).
Must Bring Photo ID - For British Nationals, one of the following (original hard copy - not electronically): a current and valid branded form of identity token, used for accessing the RMI (Railway Maintained Infrastructure) such as a Sentinel Card; in-date and valid full driving licence; in-date and valid UK Provisional Photo Card Driving Licence; in-date and valid passport, a UK biometric ID Card/Residence Permit (BRP), an Armed Forces Identity Card, a proof of age card recognised under PASS with a unique reference number (this includes the Citizen ID Card), N.I. Electoral Identity Card or a resident permit as per Home Office guidance.
For Non-British Nationals - an in-date and valid passport, Identity Card or Driving Licence from an EU or European Economic Area (EEA) country or a US Passport Card is required (original hard copy - not electronically).
PPE - Hi-vis clothing to RIS-3279-TOM standard, relevant coloured hard hat, Safety boots with full ankle/mid-sole protection/steel cap toes, safety glasses and gloves.
Please advise of any additional needs within a learning environment, such as Dyslexia, amongst candidates in advance of the course.
