Course Aims

The aim of the course is to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge required to plan and co-ordinate Any Line Open activities on Network Rail infrastructure.

Who is this course suitable for?

This course is to train individuals who are responsible for undertaking roles within the Control of Any Line Open Working as part of their duties on Network Rail infrastructure and to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills in both ALO Planning and ALO Co-ordination. Based upon their organisation requirements delegates will be able to either plan, co-ordinate, or undertake both roles.

Course Objectives

At the end of the training the delegate will be able to:

  • Relate the requirements of legislation, RSSB rule book and Network Rail standards applicable to the role of ALO Planning and Co-ordination
  • Support individuals to work within the Network Rail Lifesaving Rules and displaying Network Rail behaviours
  • Select and access the appropriate sources of information to effectively plan ALO activities
  • Plan a safe ALO activity
  • Discuss the process for ALO plan authorisation describing the roles within the authorisation process
  • Implement an authorised ALO plan
  • The process the modify the ALO plan to take into account changes on site
  • The process to re-plan a safe ALO activity working within the change control process

Additional Information

The Control of Any Line Open (OTP04) course is a one day course designed and written by Network Rail.

QTS Training offers an additional one day course, ALO Appreciation, which can be undertaken to provide a further understanding and awareness of the requirements of ALO Working.

Pre-Requisite Requirements

Must be a minimum age of 18 Must hold a valid Sentinel Track Safety Card endorsed with PTS Must meet the medical requirements of Network Rail Standard NR/L2/OHS/00124 Medical Fitness Level 2. Must meet the British standard of literacy and numeracy Must meet the requirements of Network Rail Standard NR/L1/OHS/051 (Drugs & Alcohol)  

It is the Sponsors responsibility to ensure candidates booked onto the course are eligible for the training they are to receive and in line with any relevant medical level or restriction that may apply, in accordance with NR/L2/OHS/00124 Competence Specific Fitness Medical Requirements.

Please be aware that candidates will be treated on a training event as if they are at work and they must comply with the relevant medical policy and bring their Sentinel Smartcard which will be swiped at the start of the course.

Must have sufficient command of English language as detailed in Network Rail Company Specification NR/L2/CTM/021 (Competence & Training in Track Safety).

Must bring Sentinel smart card endorsed with valid PTS, COSS or IWA (no red triangle).  If no IWA held, COSS must not be in Probationary status

PPE Visibility clothing to RIS-3279-TOM standard, hard hat, Safety boots with full ankle and mid-sole protection and gloves.

Must Bring Photo ID - For British Nationals, one of the following (original hard copy - not electronically): a current and valid branded form of identity token, used for accessing the RMI (Railway Maintained Infrastructure) such as a Sentinel Card; in-date and valid full driving licence; in-date and valid UK Provisional Photo Card Driving Licence; in-date and valid passport, a UK biometric ID Card/Residence Permit (BRP), an Armed Forces Identity Card, a proof of age card recognised under PASS with a unique reference number (this includes the Citizen ID Card), N.I. Electoral Identity Card or a resident permit as per Home Office guidance.

For Non-British Nationals - an in-date and valid passport, Identity Card or Driving Licence from an EU or European Economic Area (EEA) country or a US Passport Card is required (original hard copy - not electronically).

It is the responsibility of the individual trainees Manager to decide upon their suitability to attend the course in accordance with the current issue of NR/L2/CTM/021 Competence & Training in Track Safety.
