Course Aims

To provide refresher training for operators in the safe mounting and selection of Abrasive Wheels and Cutting Discs together with safe operation of hand-held disc cutter.

Who is this course suitable for?

All personnel requiring a refresher on abrasive wheels together with the use of a hand-held disc cutter. 

It is a legal requirement under The Provision and use of Work Equipment 1998 (PUWER) that all staff who use abrasive wheels in the workplace receive abrasive wheel training in the safe use of the tools and changing of wheels.

Course Objectives

The course covers different types of abrasive wheel, diamond blades, pre-use inspection to wheels and tools, hazards, correct PPE, fire control, regulations and correct selection of wheels together with the operation of the hand-held Disc Cutter.

The Objectives of the Course are to train delegates to be able to:

  • Understand responsibilities under Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 & other current relevant legislation.
  • Select, store and mount abrasive wheels correctly and in line with the relevant health and safety regulation.
  • Recognise hazards arising from the use of abrasive wheels and understand the precautions, which should be observed.
  • Understand the markings of abrasive wheels with regards to type and speed,
  • Inspect and test wheels for damage, wear and tear etc.
  • Understand the functions of all major/minor components.
  • Safely and correctly operate the hand-held disc cutter.

This course can be delivered at a client's premises, as long as the following are present: 

Fire extinguisher, 
Hot Works Permit
Risk Assessment

Pre Requisites 

Candidates Must be a minimum age of 16.

Would all candidates please ensure they bring with them their National Insurance Number together with 2 from the following; Company ID, Passport, Driving Licence or some other form of photographic identification.

Candidates are required to bring High Visibility Clothing to include High Visibility (HV) upper body clothing to BS EN 471:2003 class 2 as a minimum (HV tabard); and HV  lower body clothing to BS EN 471:2003 class 1 as a minimum (HV trousers or HV over trousers), PPE incl. Hard Hat, and Safety footwear.  Eye protection must conform to BS EN166 (safety goggles of Grade 1 impact standard (now EN166B).  

-    Hand Protection to EN 388:2016 Level C as minimum. (Cut 5) Close cuffed.
-    Ear Protection to EN352 standard
-    Flame Retardant Overalls/Trousers or Welding Spats
-    Respiratory protection to BS EN149 (FFP3) standard. Mask mandatory, Face Fit Respirator preferable
